Flinders Petrie's British Passport, from his first trip to Egypt
Port of the City of Liverpool
0001880 CE
This document, discovered in 0003053, has dramatically altered our understanding of early archaeological excavations in Egypt. It was once thought that fieldwork was only conducted by western women in the late 19th century; however, this passport clearly indicates that men were also involved. It remains unknown why a man would have taken part in the Great Survey of the Giza Pyramids in 1880.

While this Flinders Petrie appears to have run errands for the women of the expedition – perhaps as a secretary – male involvement in the history of Egyptology remains little more than a fringe obsession of masculinist radicals.
